Weekly Roundup: New songs by CHVRCHES, MØ and many more

A surprise new release from the Canadian singer the Weeknd underlines the week’s releases. Also new songs from the Vaccines, Frankie Cosmos and Tyler the Creator.

New Albums:

The Weeknd – My Dear Melancholy

Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd has returned with a highly anticipated new project, named My Dear Melancholy. This EP follows his highly successful third album, Starboy, which was certified platinum in many countries. The EP features contributions from Gesaffelstein, as well as DaHeala, Mike Will Made It, Skrillex and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, among others, and is produced by Frank Dumes.

The Voidz – Virtue

American rock band the Voidz are back with their second studio album, Virtue. This album follows their 2014 debut, Tyranny. They are fronted by the Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas and were previously known as Julian Casablancas + the Voidz. The band’s debut album was placed in the 50th place in NME’s Top 50 Albums of 2014 list.

The Vaccines – Combat Sports

Combat Sports is the fourth album from the West London indie rock band the Vaccines. This follows their 2015 album English Graffiti, which was critically acclaimed. This is their first album since the departure of their original drummer Pete Robertson. After Robertson’s departure in 2016, keyboardist Tim Lanham and drummer Yoann Intonti were promoted from touring musicians to official band members.

Frankie Cosmos – Vessel

American singer-songwriter Greta Kline has released her new album, Vessel under the name  Frankie Cosmos. This is a followup to her 2016 second album Next Thing, which was featured in many year-end lists. The daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, she had released various projects on Bandcamp under multiple names such as Ingrid Superstar, Greta and Zeba Fur.

Amen Dumes – Freedom

American indie rock band Amen Dunes have released their latest studio album, Freedom. Formed by singer-songwriter and musician Damon McMahon in 2006, this is their first album since 2014’s studio release Love, and the first studio release since 2015’s EP Cowboy Worship. It features contributions from Delicate Steve, Parker Kindred, Gus Seyffert , Jordi Wheeler,  Nick Zinner and was produced by Chris Coady.

Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour

Emerging country superstar Kacey Musgraves has released her new studio album, Golden Hour. This is her seventh studio album and fourth major label album, the first since her 2016 Christmas album, A Very Kacey Christmas. Releasing albums since the age of twelve, she has nominated for many awards, including the Grammy, where she won for the best country album and the best country song. This album is co-produced with Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk.

New Songs:

Chrvches – Never Say Die

Chvrches has released another single in support of their upcoming album Love Is Dead, named Never Say Die. This follows singles ‘Get Out’ and ‘My Enemy’, the latter of which featured the National frontman Matt Berninger. Featuring a warm synth line running throughout the song, the instrumentals invokes images of being drenched in neon lights. On the song, Lauren Mayberry sings about an ill-fated romance with somebody who perhaps wasn’t always true to their word.

Tyler the Creator – OKRA

One of the most divisive figure in today’s music scene, Tyler the Creator is back with a brand new single, ‘OKRA’. One of the original members of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, he has since forged a successful solo career, releasing four albums and earning various award nominations. In OKRA, he goes the minimalistic style, concentrating on his talents as a wordsmith, with his typical arranging style noticeably absent. The result is a hard edged and braggadocios and overall tight effort.

MØ – Nostalgia

Marie Ørsted Andersen, known professionally as MØ has released a new song, ‘Nostalgia’. She has released a studio album named No Mythologies To Follow and two EPs. She shot to fame with collaboration with Major Lazer on various songs such as ‘Lean On’ and ‘Cold Water’. This is a typical dancehall affair and will sit on rotation in clubs throughout the summer.
