‘Afreen Afreen’ sensation Momina Mustehsan has released her ‘debut single’, a collaboration with Arjun Kanungo titled ‘Aaya Na Tu’, and it is currently topping the Apple Music Charts and trending on YouTube.
The Pakistani singer went viral after her Coke Studio performance with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for Coke Studio: Season 9’s ‘Afreen Afreen’. She sang three songs in Season 9 and got a chance to show off her vocals in two songs in Season 10.
Naturally, there was a considerable buzz around Momina’s ‘debut single’ (a marketing gimmick considering this is not her debut as a singer, neither is it her debut in India since she sang for Bollywood film Ek Villain in 2014), but the end product is all flash with little substance. Kanungo composed music is average, with the singer repeating his own tried-and-tested formula. The lyrics composed by Kunaal Vermaa lack depth – ‘Main Akeli Reh Gayi/ Na Jaane Tu Kahaan Kho Gaya/ Jaate Jaate Tu Mud Ke Phir Dekh Le/ Dil Kehta Hai Fir Ek Dafa Dhoondh Le’.
The music video sees the duo in Bangkok, pining over love, but the sub-par melody and the consistent tininess makes ‘Aaya Na Tu’ a forgetful three-and-a-half minute experience.
