When it comes to standing out as a singer in Bollywood in 2016, there is little competition to Badshah. Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia, better known by his stage name ‘Badshah’, is well known for his Punjabi, Haryanvi and Hindi numbers; one of the most celebrated artists today, and quite deservingly so, owing to the sheer hard work and effort he puts into his work.
Badshah was formerly a part of the band Mafia Mundeer along with another contemporary artist, Honey Singh. Both of them worked together for quite a few years, giving their audience a series of hits, including Angreji Beat and Brown Rang. But differences between them caused the band to split, following which the two artists parted ways.
In the initial years after the split, Honey Singh was successful in making his mark in Bollywood, delivering one hit after another. But his ex-bandmate was not too far behind. Deftly manoeuvring his way through Bollywood, Badshah has made it to the charts with his diligence.
His Bollywood debut song Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai for the movie Khoobsurat is again one song which undoubtedly makes it to every current party playlist. Almost around the same time, his song Saturday Saturday for the movie Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya gave him further recognition as the party ‘King’ (pun intended).
Taking over the reigns of rap in Bollywood from Honey Singh, he has delivered smashing hits. Kar Gayi Chull from the movie Kapoor & Sons is vivid in a way that it won’t let you take your eyes of the scintillating duo of the young eye-candy Alia Bhat and hotness icon Siddharth Malhotra.
One of his most off-genre songs is Bolo Har Har Har from the movie Shivaay. This song has incredibly powerful lyrics.“Jataa Mein Ganga, Chaand Mukut Hai, Saumya Kabhi, Kabhi Bada Vikat Hai, Aag Se Janma Hai Kailashi, Shakti Jiski Taras Ki Pyaasi…”. This coupled with a highly potent rap by Badshah. This song is one of my favourites (I listen to it on loop!), and no amount of writing can do justice to the trance the song indulges you in. Baaki Baatein Peene Baad, with the singer, Arjun Kanungo, and a good number of other songs, both single and with contemporary artists have brought him among the top Indian rappers today.
It goes without saying, he has a long way ahead, like every other artist. While he has successfully climbed up the charts, there are many ahead of and better than him. But it takes something to stand out among everyone, and even if not the best, we have to give it to this rap ‘king’ for standing out among others in 2016.
